EKG Technicians


EKG technicians can earn approximately $40,000 per year, following successful completion of this course; student will be able to apply for certification as an EKG technician (CET) by the National Health Care Association. (Fee for the examination is $105 plus online admin fee $25.) Results are known instantaneously after you submit your answers. Following certification, students will able to apply as entry level EKG technicians or EKG monitoring technicians


As a Certified EKG Technician, you’ll operate machines that record the electrical activity of a patient’s heart. EKG rhythms provide important data for the diagnosis of heart conditions. As a CET, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:


  •     Set up and administer EKG’s, stress tests

  •     Prepare patients for Holter or ambulatory monitoring

  •     Edit and deliver final test results to physicians for analysis

  •     Schedule appointments

  •     Transcribe physician’s interpretations

This is a four to five month course. The first four months cover basic concepts of the cardiovascular system including anatomy, physiology and essential skills needed to operate the equipment and perform and interpret an EKG. After the completion of basic concepts, students are placed at medical facilities for externship. (Overall 19 students that have contacted me were hired at Kaiser, Valley Medical Hospital and Sutter’s Health following their internships at a rate of $20 – $28 per hour based on full-time, part-time or on call positions.)


CPR/FA by AHA is offered during the class with a fee of $60 that includes manual, mouthpiece and card cost.

CPR Administered by your instructor $60

Online State Certification Test (CET): $130 certification takes place on campus after completion and passing of the final course.



Class Timings


Classes start on September 3rd, 2014. The class is offered twice a week on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

During the externship the instructor makes visits to the facilities to evaluate the student’s skills. Also there is a control class on Saturday’s only between 9:00 am and 10:00 am to assess the student’s learning.





Students must be fluent in English writing and reading and possess basic math skills. Students should have excellent communication skills.



Mandatory Requierments


Students must have CPR certification by AHA, vaccinations, drug clearance, background check done in order to be placed in externship.

Immunizations and HIPAA requirements must be completed within a month after starting the course in order to have health stats cleared for Kaiser Externship.

Prices may vary. Vaccinations to be done as per Kaiser are as follows:


  •     Two TB skin tests in consecutive current years; or 2 TB tests in the current year. $20 each

  •      If TB tests are positive, a chest x-ray will be necessary. (price may vary)

  •     Two MMR vaccinations one month apart. $60

  •     3 hepatitis B shots (series) $35

  •     2 chickenpox vaccinations $10 each or Varicella Titer (price may vary)

  •     Tdap booster dose

  •     Influenza/Flu optional



Uniform and Shoes


Ceil blue scrubs and tennis shoes must be purchased by the first week of class. Items can be found at Walmart, Work World and another location provided by teacher.

Background clearance check (this can be obtained at a local police office) and drug clearance test (consult your primary care physician) are mandatory for all students to work at Kaiser.
